Spain announced Monday it is sealing off its land borders in a new move aimed at curbing the spread of the coronavirus.
Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska said that from midnight, only Spanish citizens and residents - along with people who work just across the border - will be allowed in.
Others will only be able to cross if they can prove a compelling need.
The restrictions will not apply to the transportation of goods, Grande-Marlaska said.
Spain has borders with France and Portugal, as well as with the British territory of Gibraltar, the principality of Andorra, and with Morocco, due to its two North African enclaves.
Spain is the fourth-most infected country in the world, with more than 9,000 cases and 309 fatalities.
For most people, coronavirus causes only mild or moderate symptoms, although for some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness.
