Surfer has close encounter with white shark, netizens shocked

A surfer had a close encounter with a shark in the waters of Cape Cod for his morning surf but did not realize that it was a peak season for shark activity.

A surfer had a close encounter with a shark in the waters of Cape Cod on the morning of September 20. The surfer, Devon Zimmerman was a regular surfer but he did not realize that it is a peak season for white shark activity. Zimmerman initially heard some splashing of the water but turned around to see a shark just 10 feet away from him. He reportedly later described his first thought was of 'pure shock'. The picture was clicked by the photographer of Orleans Beaches and was posted on their official page, the same day as a “reminder” to all beachgoers.

The viral encounter

As reported by the local media, Devon Zimmerman is a resident of Brooklyn who paddled on his surfboard at Nauset Beach for few minutes when he initially heard faint rustling only turning to see the head of the great white shark popping out of the water. It came as a shock for Zimmerman who evidently then realized that the thing is real while mentioning the shark. He also told local media that it was real and in between him and the beach. Fortunately, he escaped the situation by lifting his feet out of the water and patiently waiting on his surfboard while the shark quitely swam away. Immediately after the incident, he returned to the beach. Zimmerman also called the entire incident as “intense”.

Frozen with fear?

As soon as the picture came in the public eye, the netizens did not fail to notice the great encounter. Not only did some of them feel the chills of the situations, others quickly converted it into hilarious memes. One of the Twitter users called Zimmerman “brave, while some of them referred to him as a “careless surfer” who avoided all the warning signs of the increased shark activity. The internet users also commented on the position of the surfer, someone even said that Zimmerman's position of staying still is not because he is calm, but because he is “frozen with fear”.
