VIRAL: Sikh man dresses up as Santa Claus, distributes gifts & does Bhangra to spread Christmas joy

It's that time of year again. December has come and with it all the joys of Christmas. It's time for the gifts under the tree, the lights in the windows, the cards in the mail, Christman feast with family and friends, snow in the yard, stockings hanging in the living room, and shouts of "Merry Christmas" to those who pass us in the streets.

Amid the joy and happiness, a video of a Sikh man dressed as Santa Claus is winning hearts on social media. The video, which features a Punjabi man suited up as Santa Claus, distributing sweets on the snow-covered streets of Canada, has gone viral again after it was shared by Facebook page Sikh Channel.

With several shares and thousand views, the viral clip has left many praising the man for “Breaking Barriers”. In the 6.11-minute video, the man dressed up as Santa can be seen interacting with people, distributing gifts and even doing the Bhangra.

The legend of Santa Claus can be traced back hundreds of years to a monk named St. Nicholas. It is believed that Nicholas was born sometime around 280 A.D. in Patara, near Myra in modern-day Turkey. Much admired for his piety and kindness, St. Nicholas became the subject of many legends. It is said that he gave away all of his inherited wealth and travelled the countryside helping the poor and sick.

Over the course of many years, Nicholas’s popularity spread and he became known as the protector of children and sailors. His feast day is celebrated on the anniversary of his death, December 6. By the Renaissance, St. Nicholas was the most popular saint in Europe. 

Meanwhile, Rudolph, “the most famous reindeer of all,” was born over a hundred years after his eight flying counterparts. The red-nosed wonder was the creation of Robert L. May.
