A video of a cyclist in Netherland narrowly escaping being hit by a train while trying to cross the rails has gone viral.
In the video, the cyclist is seen shown waiting at the crossing for the train to pass. Once the train passes, he walks across first the railway track and is seen crossing the the next railway track, when suddenly, seemingly out of nowhere a train, comes along.
The cyclist was lucky to have narrowly escaped being hit by the train.
However, the incident which happened a few months ago has cautioned the Dutch rail operator ProRail, who made the video public over a week ago, in order to alert the commuters of such behaviour. The video has over eight lakh views
In a statement, Netherland's railway infrastructure agency has said that three people have died in railway crossings in the country. It has said in its statement which was released on November 24, "ProRail is engaged in a battle to lift all unguarded crossings in the Netherlands."
ProRail Stakeholder Manager, Geert Vlogman, has said that asked people to understand the scale of impact accidents have on train drivers, conductors and emergency responders. He also said they people should wait before crossing the tracks. He spoke about the powerlessness of the train driver to do anything when someone comes in their way when the train is running on the tracks. He also said that people must wait before crossing the tracks to ensure there is no train coming, and look carefully before stepping on the tracks and signal to drivers if they see the train coming.
Indian Railways, which often faces problems due to people endangering their lives while traveling in trains, may take a leaf or two from Netherland's strategy to use the social media in this way to prevent railway accidents.
