The pro-government Yemeni forces confronted an attempt by Houthi rebels to infiltrate in the port city of Hodeidah and killed seven fighters on November 16. According to a military official, a joint pro-government force opposed the rebels who were trying to gain access to the military sites of Tuhyata district of the Hodeidah province. However, the Houthi military operation was halted by pro-government forces who repulsed the rebels after brief clashes.
Committed to a cease-fire brokered
The pro-government military official confirmed that they are committed to the cease-fire brokered by the United Nations irrespective of the repeated attacks by the Houthi rebels and are still stationed in the port city area. The Iran-backed Houthi rebels control most of the Hoidedah while the Saudi-allied government troops have spread into the southeaster districts. A civil war has been witnessed by Yemen since 2014 when the Houthis seized all northern provinces including the capital Sanaa. Saudi Arabia has also been leading an Arab military coalition that intervened in the Yemen conflict of 2015 in order to support the government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi who was forced into exile by Houthi rebels.
The poorest country in the world
According to the official report by the United Nations, if the civil war in Yemen goes on till 2022, it will become the poorest country in the world. The people below poverty were 47 percent in 2014 which is expected to hike up 75 percent by the end of this year due to the violent war. The report by the UN was published on September 26 which discussed the entire condition of Yemen. The UNDP Administrator, Achim Steiner also said in the report that civil war in Yemen has made the country 'the largest humanitarian crisis in the world'.
