Russia's Investigative Committee has released new footage of the wreckage of a Polish plane that crashed outside the city of Smolensk 10 years ago.

The crash happened on 10th April 2010, when a high-ranking state delegation was heading to Katyn, near Smolensk, to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the massacre of thousands of Polish officers by the Soviets during World War II.

Ninety six people were killed when the aircraft went down, including Polish President Lech Kaczynski.

The Russian Investigative Committee's spokesperson on Friday reiterated Russia's position that the plane crash was a tragic accident.

Earlier on Friday, ceremonies were held in Smolensk and Poland in memory of those who died.

Poland's government is demanding that Russia return the wreckage of the plane.

It has made similar demands in the past, and Russia has replied that it is keeping the wreckage of the Tupolev plane because of an ongoing investigation.
