Chile's healthcare system is making a concerted effort to vaccinate elderly residents against COVID-19, and began making home visits to do just that on Thursday.
Two sisters, Filomena and Georgina Zuleta, were paid a visit by Dr. Patricia Mendez del Campo, the Director of Santiago's Metropolitan Health Center Service and two nurses.
After receiving their vaccines, the two women were provided with cards to prove they had been inoculated.
"We have to reach 80% of elderly above 65-years-old to to be vaccinated because this is the population with a higher risk of becoming severely ill and if they are severely ill, at more risk of dying," explained Dr. del Campo.
Chile has vaccinated a higher proportion of its citizens than any other country in the region.
Some 3.1 million people have been inoculated out of a total population of 19 million.
