Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on Sunday sent his wishes for a speedy recovery to US President Donald Trump. During a meeting with ministers, Maduro implied that Trump had not taken enough care to prevent him getting the virus. He also announced that his son and eldest sister will be volunteers in the third phase of trials of the potential Russian vaccine Sputnik V.
Maduro's comment came two days after Venezuela received the first shipment of the drug and became the first country in the region to participate in the process of testing it. Around 2,000 people in Venezuela are expected to take part in the trial in the coming days.
"As soon as we start the mass vaccination, I will be the first to get it," Maduro said.
In Venezuela, there are about 78,000 positive cases of the new coronavirus. More than 75,500 were detected between June 4 and October 3, when the death toll jumped from 20 to 649. Experts argue that the low number of cases compared to other countries in the region is largely due to the isolation that the country is experiencing after years of political, economic and social crisis.
