South Korea soldier mistakenly opens fire near demarcation line amid tensions with North

A South Korean soldier accidentally fired shots along the border with North Korea on Saturday. The incident occured during a training exercise and Seoul has informed Pyongyang that the incident was "unintentional", according to a report from Sputnik. The soldier discharged four live rounds from a machine gun during the training session for an army unit at an observation post in the demilitarized zone in Gangwon-do province at 6:27 p.m. on Saturday. The training session was not planned to involve gunfire, and all of the bullets landed on the South Korean side of the Military Demarcation Line. According to an official from the unit, there were no indications of any reaction from North Korea and an investigation is currently being conducted to determine the details of the incident. In May 2020, bullets from North Korea struck a South Korean outpost in the central area of the 4-kilometer-wide demilitarized zone, which prompted South Korean forces to return fire, marking the first armed engagement between South and North Korea in a long time.
