Spain protesters call for virus-safe schools

Teachers, parents and students gathered in the Spanish city of Malaga on Saturday to call for stronger safety measures for the return to schools amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The demonstration was part of similar rallies across eight cities over measures put in place by both the Spanish central government and Andalusia's regional government.

Schools in Andalusia are set to fully return on September 10.

Teacher José Manuel López said staff were "worried" about the virus spreading not only for their own health, but the potential for more closures if outbreaks occur.

Susana Rubí Claros, who attended the protest with her six-year-old son, said while principals were working hard, more teachers needed to be hired in order to allow for smaller class sizes.

The restart of education comes as Spain has been dealing with an increase in COVID-19 infections in recent weeks.

The Spanish Ministry of Health reported more than 10,000 new virus cases on Friday, 4,503 of which had been diagnosed within the previous 24 hours.
