Sri Lanka blasts: Rajinikanth expresses his sorrow, Kamal Haasan writes, ‘Ironic that the island that spawned the word serendipity is not able to find it’

People from all over the world have been expressing shock at the bomb blasts that rocked Colombo on Easter Sunday. Celebrities from the Indian film industry too have been pouring out their hearts out over the tragedy that claimed the lives of over 180 persons and injured over 400. Actor-politicians Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, who are popular stars in Tamil, the second language in Sri Lanka, conveyed their grief over the tragedy while condoling the families of the victims.

In a tweet in Tamil, Rajinikanth wrote, “I have no words to express the sorrow I feel towards the people who have suffered due to the blasts on this Easter Day in Sri Lanka.” 

Haasan believed violence can never be the final solution to human disagreements. The veteran added that he found it ironic that the island that spawned serendipity (Sri Lanka’s ancient name was Serendip) is not able to find it. The actor-politician also conveyed his sympathies to the victims while hoping that the government is impartial and swift in delivering justice.

Earlier, Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe addressed the media and said 'action will be taken to stop the activity of all extremist groups in the country. Social media would be temporarily banned with 12-hour curfew from 6 pm to 6 am.'

On Sunday, three churches- St Anthony's Church in Colombo, St Sebastian's Church in the western coastal town of Negombo and another church in the eastern town of Batticaloa and three hotels, the Shangrila, the Cinnamon Grand, and the Kingsbury were targeted, killing 185 people and injuring over 400, as per reports. There were two more blasts in Dematagoda and Dehiwala in the day, as per reports.
