Teen Dies of Electrocution on Bus While Charging Phone in Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur: A teenager in Malaysia died after being electrocuted while charging his phone on a bus. Eighteen-year-old Nur Asymawi Jasmadi died on November 1 at the Penang Sentral bus terminal in Butterworth, shortly after boarding a bus headed to Kuala Lumpur.The assistant commissioner of police Anuar Abdul Rahman said that, the teenager tried to use a socket on the bus to charge his phone at around 6pm (local time).Fellow passengers reportedly heard the victim scream about ten minutes after he plugged in his phone to the charger on the bus. The driver noted that the teenager showed signs of severe electric shock, with noticeable burn marks on his left hand.“An initial investigation revealed burn marks on the victim’s left fingers, suspected to be from an electric shock while he was charging his phone,” The assistant commissioner said in a statement.Authorities concluded the cause from the melted charging cable and the overheated mobile phone. Passengers, seeing foam coming from the teenager's mouth, immediately called emergency services, which arrived at approximately 6:20 PM local time.Paramedics pronounced the victim dead shortly after arriving at the scene, and an autopsy later confirmed that electrocution was the cause of death.Malaysian transport minister Anthony Loke said that the department would form a special task force to investigate into the incident that took place."The transport ministry treats this electric shock incident, which tragically resulted in the death of a teenager while he was charging his phone on the express bus, with utmost seriousness," he said in a statement.“The special task force will investigate the cause of the incident to ensure it does not recur and that the safety of passengers will be guaranteed,” he added.He said the task force would have three agencies, including the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research.
