President-elect Donald Trump has announced his intention to nominate New York Rep. Elise Stefanik as the next US Ambassador to the United Nations. The selection of Stefanik, a prominent pro-Israel lawmaker, aligns with Trump’s “America First” approach to foreign policy and his commitment to maintaining strong alliances with global partners.

“I am honored to nominate Chairwoman Elise Stefanik to serve in my Cabinet as US Ambassador to the United Nations. Elise is an incredibly strong, tough, and smart America First fighter,” Trump said in a statement to The New York Post.

Stefanik, who currently holds a high-ranking position among House Republicans, confirmed her acceptance of the role. "I am truly honored to earn President Trump’s nomination to serve in his Cabinet as US Ambassador to the United Nations,” Stefanik stated, adding that her conversation with Trump left her “deeply humbled.”

She expressed optimism for the country’s future under Trump’s leadership, citing the recent election as a “reminder that brighter days are ahead — both at home and abroad.” Stefanik also emphasized that the United States must expect strength from allies in their pursuit of global peace, underscoring the importance of collaborative efforts on the world stage.

Stefanik came to the spotlight after confronting president of universities

Stefanik’s pro-Israel stance has been a key part of her political profile, and she has frequently advocated for measures to counter antisemitism in the United States. Last year, her direct questioning led to the resignation of the presidents of Harvard University and the University of Pennsylvania, after they hesitated to condemn campus calls for violence against Jewish students.

During a recent meeting of the Knesset Caucus for Jewish and Pro-Israel Students on Campuses, Stefanik criticized the Biden administration’s decision to pause a shipment of military equipment to Israel. She warned that failing to fully support Israel’s defense capabilities could have consequences for the United States, referring to the deadly attack on October 7 as a stark reminder of the risks faced globally.

Stefanik’s nomination will now go to the Senate, where her pro-Israel stance and foreign policy experience are likely to be key talking points in her confirmation process. With her background in Congress and strong advocacy for America’s allies, Stefanik’s role at the UN may mark a shift in the US approach to international relations under Trump’s incoming administration.
