British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Friday workers would be allowed to return to offices from August 1 provided their workplaces were "COVID secure".

"Whatever employers decide, they should consult closely with their employees and only ask people to return to their place of work if it is safe," Johnson told a news conference.

Johnson also said from August 1, businesses such as bowling alleys, skating rinks, casinos, and beauty services could resume but nightclubs and soft play areas would need to remain closed.

He added indoor performances to a live audience would also restart subject to the success of pilot schemes, "and we will also pilot large gatherings in venues like sports stadia with a view to a wider reopening in the autumn".
