British police have advised a council in southern England to remove a statue of Scouts founder Robert Baden-Powell because it might become a target by anti-racism protesters. The deputy leader of Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole City Council on Thursday said they were considering removing the statue from the seafront at Poole, but insisted it would be temporary. Like some Englishmen of his time, Baden-Powell held racist views and he also expressed admiration for Adolf Hitler. But the suggestion his statue could disappear sparked heated criticism from Poole locals on Thursday, who questioned the need for the removal of a tribute to a man who had done so much to bring people of different backgrounds together.
