Britain's Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab confirmed on Wednesday that the government's target of testing 250,000 people for the new coronavirus a day was still a goal but would not place a deadline on it.

Raab said testing capacity had doubled since last week with the latest figures showing 43,563 tests being carried out daily, still far from the 100,000 the government had set as a target by Thursday.

Standing in for Prime Minister Boris Johnson who on Wednesday became a father to a baby boy, Raab was being quizzed by the leader of the opposition Sir Keir Starmer on testing, deaths in care homes and a shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) for doctors and nurses on the frontline.
