London's landmarks were lit blue on Thursday evening in support of National Health Service workers and emergency personnel.

Landmarks like the London Eye ferris wheel and The Shard skyscraper were among the buildings to turn the British capital's skyline blue.

Healthcare workers at St Thomas' Hospital, where Prime Minister Boris Johnson is receiving treatment for COVID-19 symptoms, walked out for a few minutes to cheer for their colleagues and other essential workers.

Londoners also came out of their windows and front doors to applaud the emergency services.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks.

For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and could lead to death.

According to the Johns Hopkins University, the UK has 65,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 7,900 recorded deaths.
