UK hospital celebrates its 1st ICU survivor

A hospital in the UK celebrated the release of their first coronavirus patient from intensive care on Monday.Jothy Kesavan, 51, was admitted to Croydon University Hospital on 17 March.

More than 300 patients have already been discharged from the hospital after receiving treatment for COVID-19, but Kesavan is the first patient to recover from the intensive care unit.

"What fantastic reward for all of our teams today," said Chief Nurse Elaine Clancy on Monday to the Croydon Health Services social media pages.

Chief Operating Officer Lee McPhail, said: "I think it's a fanastic testament to all our efforts at Croydon Health Services."

The UK has 94,829 confirmed cases and 12,125 reported deaths, according to the Johns Hopkins University tally at 1600 GMT.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks.

For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death.
