UK Sec Patel lays out UK point-based immigration

U.K. Home Secretary Priti Patel on Monday announced details on how the country's new points-based immigration system will operate when it goes into effect next January.The system is designed to cut the number of low-skilled migrants entering Britain, but also aims to make it easier for higher-skilled workers to get U.K. visas.

"Last year, the British people voted to get Brexit done and introduce a points-based immigration system," Patel said, addressing the House of Commons. "We are doing exactly that."She described the system as one which would "take back control of our borders" and "crack down on foreign criminals."Points will be given for English language ability, having a job offer from an approved employer, and meeting a minimum salary threshold.

In a written ministerial statement to the House of Commons, Patel announced a fast-track visa for National Health Service workers.Those who work in social care will not be eligible for the special visa - a point on which opposition lawmaker Nick Thomas-Symonds challenged the government."I was disappointed, if unfortunately not shocked, to see evidence yet again that this government does not consider carers to be skilled workers," he said."What does the government have against care workers?"Kevin Foster, a Conservative member of parliament, responded that the government's aim was to "prioritize jobs here in the country," rather than "looking abroad to recruit at or near the minimum wage."
