The UK Health Secretary defended a decision to place visitors to Britain under a two-week quarantine, saying they were worried about new cases of coronavirus arriving in the UK from several countries, including Brazil.

"It's really sad to see some of the countries like, for instance, Brazil, where the numbers are really shooting up, so we do have to have this measure in place," Matt Hancock told Sky News on Tuesday.

Hancock said the government was working on having travel corridors "so that if there's countries where it's safe, where we can have an agreement with their government for safe transit, then we can put that in place."

But he argued that the quarantine programme was needed overall "because there are some countries where it's increasingly looking like the virus is out of control."
