Amid Russia-Ukraine's ongoing war, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that "it's not the right time for elections". The statement came while all elections, including the presidential vote scheduled for next spring, have been effectively cancelled due to the ongoing martial law in place since the conflict started last year."We must decide that now is the time of defence, the time of battle, on which the fate of the state and people depends," said Zelenskyy in his daily address. Further, he added that it was a time for the country to be united, not divided.Zelenskyy's nightly address on electionsIn his statement, Zelenskyy emphasized that in wartime, amidst numerous challenges, it is deemed highly irresponsible to introduce the topic of elections casually and playfully. It was stressed that any politically divisive actions should be halted, recognising that the current period is focussed on defence and the battle that will determine the state and people's fate, rather than manipulations that Ukraine's adversaries might anticipate. The belief was expressed that the present moment is not conducive to holding elections. Instead, it was suggested that state structures are capable of resolving political disputes and providing society with the necessary answers to eliminate room for conflicts and external interference in Ukraine.“I believe that now is not the right time for elections,” said ZelenskyyThe Russia-Ukraine war continues...Colonel Oleksandr Shtupun stated that Russian forces in the Tavria region are employing what he referred to as "cannon fodder assaults," reported Ukrainian news organisation Ukrinform. “Over the past day, the enemy launched eight airstrikes and 26 artillery barrages in the Tavria direction. There were also 42 combat clashes, most of which occurred near Marinka. It is worth noting that the enemy pursues the tactics of ‘cannon fodder assaults’ and keeps its equipment safe,” said Shtupun, reported Guardian. According to US estimates, approximately 120,000 Russian forces have been killed, and 180,000 have been injured in the ongoing war.
