On the anniversary of 9/11, UN chief Antonio Guterres has issued a warning that Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's plan to annex an important part of West Bank will violate International law.

Benjamin Netanyahu earlier this week, made a controversial pledge to annex a key part of West Bank as part of his reelection campaign for Israel's General elections even as the Prime Minister Of Palestine ridiculed and warned him of any foolish move that may embarrass Israel internationally. Arab nations warned Netanyahu of consequences for the stagnated peace process.

Israel is set to go to elections next week on September 17.

UN Chief's Warning

“If such steps (annexation of the west bank) are implemented, will constitute a serious violation of international law,” Spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a statement. Additionally, the spokesman said that this would be devastating to the potential of re-starting negotiations and peace in the region, while seriously undermining the practicality of a two-state solution. The UN Spokesperson also tweeted regarding the issue.

Netanyahu's promise

Israel's general elections are scheduled to be held next week on September 17. Netanyahu's controversial reelection pledge  includes the expansion of Israel's sovereignty over the Jordan valley and the Northern part of the Dead Sea, which accounts for a third of West Bank, if he wins.

Prime Minister Netanyahu even sent out a tweet in Hebrew that reads in English that “Next week, I ask that you give me the power - and vote in favor - so that I apply Israeli sovereignty to the Jordan Valley immediately after the elections. This will be the first step in applying Israeli sovereignty to Judea and Samaria and other areas. For posterity - give me the power to work for Israel's security.”

However, the Pledge does not include annexing any Palestinian cities such as Jericho. The campaign promise late on September 10th invited condemnation from key Arab nations with many warning of disastrous consequences for the Israeli-Palestinian peace process which has been stuck for a long time now.
