UNGA: President Mohamed calls for united fight against terrorism

Somalian President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, on September 26, at the UNGA raised the issue of terrorism naming Al-Shabaab and called for its final defeat

Somalian President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, on September 26, at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), said one cannot stay quiet about people's dismay and rising inequality in the country for long. Blaming the current situation in country on "unfair" globalisation, Mohamed attributed it to rising inequality, poverty and division. “Somalia’s road to recovery lead by its resilient people and government has come a very long way”, said Mohamed. “Yet we can not be blind or remain silent on the discontent with rising inequality, poverty and division caused by unfair globalisation which has become dominant in the world today,” he added.

Somalia’s relationship with Kenya

Mohamed, on Somalia’s relationship with Kenya, said the Horn of Africa is committed to maintaining a good relationship with Kenya.

“Somalia communities continue to invest in the Republic of Kenya which indeed contributes to the growth and economic prosperity,” said Mohamed.

He added that Somalia encourages its business communities to invest in countries in East Africa and beyond. After the address, he said that it was a great honour to address the UNGA and share Somalia's journey of recovery and resilience.

Electoral process of Somalia

Mohamed emphasized on the electoral process of Somalia adding that the country held successful regional elections in some federal member states. The country will go into national parliamentary and presidential elections in 2021.

“ We are determined to facilitate the success of this process through an inclusive electoral appeal with voter registrations and better public awareness of the importance of inclusive politics and national progress, the perfect example of the success of the multilateral system”, opined Mohamed.

Issue of terrorism

Somalian President also raised the issue of terrorism naming Al-Shabaab and called for its final defeat. “Today our national discussion focusses on...how to finally defeat the threat of Al-Shabab terrorist organisations with our valuable partners at home and abroad,” he said. Al-Shabaab is a jihadist fundamentalist group based in East Africa. “With the help of our international partners, we are striving to rid ourselves of the last pockets of violent extremism and terrorism,” he added.
