US: NASA unveils One-Size-Fits-All next-generation Space suits
NASA launched its one-size-fits-all new generation space suits highlighting its advantages as against the spacesuits of Apollo-era at Washington Headquarters
National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is all set to launch its astronauts in space as it unveiled its one-size-fits-all new generation space suit highlighting its advantages as against the spacesuits of the Apollo era. The launch of the spacesuits took place at the NASA Washington headquarters on October 15 as the organisation collaborates with SpaceX and plans to return to the Moon by 2024.
Launch of next-generation spacesuits
NASA previewed the next-generation spacesuit known as the Artemis spacesuits. There are two space suits, one of them is the prototype of the Orion Crew Survival Suit which is specifically designed for the launch and re-entry into space. Another spacesuit called the Exploration Extravehicular Mobility Unit (xEMU) is designed to undertake the lunar mission which aims at exploring the South Pole of the Moon.
Advantages of next-generation Spacesuits
The spacesuit engineer Kristine Davis wore the red, blue and white xEMU suit. The suit is vastly improved in its motion range as it bears systems that support the movement on the waist, arms and legs. Apart from this, the xEMU's spacesuits that will be used for the spacewalks on the International Space Station have an infinite capacity to absorb carbon dioxide, which will help in better breathing. The excess of carbon dioxide, which is the byproduct of respiration is poisonous for the spacewalker. The suites have been designed with added extendable which makes them free size and fit all.
NASA Administrator reflects on Apollo mission
During the launch, Jim Bridenstine, the NASA Administrator, reflected back on the Apollo mission where the astronauts performed bunny hopped on the surface of the Moon due to restricted movement. He said, but with the new-generation suits, the astronauts will be able to properly walk on the surface of the Moon. The suits will provide a full life support system for six
days in case of emergency situations.
The Artemis Mission
The Artemis Mission of NASA aims at finding more evidence of water ice on the South Pole of the Moon. The discovery of water ice happened back in 2009, which can help in supporting life and also splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen to fuel the spacecraft propulsion. The success of the Moon mission can further lay grounds for Mars Mission scheduled in 2030.
