Another round of US election interference? Hillary Clinton warns Putin would 'do it again'

Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned of election meddling next year at the hands of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who she insists interfered in the 2016 polls. During a conversation with MSNBC, Clinton warned that the leader could get in the way of America's electoral system again. 

“The Russians have proved themselves to be quite adept at interfering and if he has a chance, he’ll do it again," she said on Sunday, adding that “I don’t think despite all of the deniers, there’s any doubt that he interfered in our election." She claimed that Putin "worked so hard against" her because he allegedly wanted her away from the White House.

Her remarks refer to a breach of Democratic National Committee emails tied to Russian-based actors uncovered by cyber security experts in 2016. It is believed that the Russian government was involved in carrying out a troll campaign to take down Clinton's White House bid. 

After former US President Donald Trump won, he dismissed allegations of conspiring with Russia and attacking his rival's campaign. Several Republicans went on to pin the blame on Big Tech companies for interfering in the next presidential election. As a result, Moscow found itself cornered by Western isolation and sanctions.

“Putin is this authoritarian dictator who literally kills his opposition, kills journalists, poisons people who disagree with him, invades another country, [and] interferes with our election,” Clinton argued, warning of a “creeping fascism” and “wannabe dictators” that have now begun to emerge in the US political sphere.

When asked if Trump, her former opponent, can be believed when he says that he would not pardon himself in the future despite facing a total of 91 criminal counts, the ex-First Lady said, “I don’t believe him on anything." Over the course of the interview, Clinton also touched upon the impeachment against US President Joe Biden announced by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. “Sadly, the Speaker of the House is too weak to stand up against the most rabid block of his members who don’t care what the truth or the facts are. They want a political problem that they can try to use for their own benefit," she said.
