Angelo Fuster, a 70-year-old political consultant, called the annual speech "gimmicky."
"But unfortunately, it's the kind of thing that works," Fuster said. "He's a showman. And even though it was a long, long speech of, as I said, half truths, it's still the kind of thing that it's easy for a lot of people to believe."
Stephen Duncan, who watched the address at Manuel's Tavern in Atlanta, took issue with Trump's characterization of the economy.
"Talk about the economy booming, but there's a lot of people that are still homeless, are still struggling paycheck to paycheck," Duncan said. "What's happening on Wall Street and what's happening down here on Main Street is two different things."
And Frank Robinson said he purposefully avoided watching a broadcast of the speech.
"I just don't think I would have gotten that much out of it," he said. "Our current president is not really grounded in fact. You know, he lies constantly. And I just don't need to see it anymore."
