Mayor: Chicago won't be punching bag for Trump
Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, a Democrat, told reporters Tuesday that she has received assurances that, if deployed to Chicago, federal agents will not arrest or detain residents without any cause.
Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, a Democrat, told reporters Tuesday that she has received assurances that, if deployed to Chicago, federal agents will not arrest or detain residents without any cause.
But she says the city will be ready if that happens.
"Unfortunately, we can't put anything past the Trump administration," said Lightfoot, adding: "I'm hopeful that they will not be foolish enough to bring that kind of nonsense to Chicago. But I'm also not naive, and we're going to be diligent, and we're gonna be ready, and if we need to stop him, we are going to."
Lightfoot, a frequent Trump critic, slammed the president in a Monday letter for "unhelpful" rhetoric and detailed ways the federal government could help the city to reduce violence, including gun safety reform, public safety support, community outreach and community investment.
Chicago resident Avis Weisman says the idea of federal agents patrolling the streets of Chicago is a "horrendous" idea.
"He (Trump) needs to cooperate with the city and not bring destruction to the city," said Weisman.
