The Department of Justice held a National Opioid Summit Friday in Washington, where First Lady Melania Trump was a featured speaker.
The First Lady told the audience "Finding solutions to our nation's drug problem is something I care deeply about, especially when it comes to its negative effects on children and families."
The event is held to promote awareness and the Trump administration's and DOJ's efforts to curtail the opioid epidemic.
"I believe promoting education and awareness is crucial to overcoming this crisis. If we continue to work together, I know we can create a safer, healthier and more hopeful world for our children," Melania Trump said.
US Attorney General William Barr told attorneys and law enforcement officials attending the summit that "Under the leadership of President Trump, ending this scourge has been the top priority of the administration and the Department of Justice."
"We have delivered truly great results for the American people, including declining overdose deaths for two years in a row," he said.
Barr said that the department prosecuted more than 11,000 opioid cases last year.
