PM Modi: Avoid politicising UN & FATF efforts to combat terrorism

Speaking at the Leaders' Dialogue on Strategic Responses to Terrorist and Violent Extremist Narratives at the UN headquarters in New York on Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the terrorists should not be allowed funding and arms, calling for the need to avoid politicisation of mechanisms like UN listings and FATF. MEA Secretary (West) A Gitesh Sarma addressed a press conference briefing the media about the PM Modi's remarks at the event. 

"The Prime Minister called for qualitative upgradation in the ongoing cooperation and intelligence sharing through bilateral and regional frameworks. The Prime Minister said that terrorists should not be allowed to get funds and arms. For this objective to be realised, he said, we need to avoid politicisation of mechanisms like UN listings and FATF. These mechanisms need to be enforced," MEA Secretary (West) A Gitesh Sarma said quoting PM Modi.

The MEA Secretary (West) also stated that PM Modi in his remarks suggested the need to institutionalise counter-terrorism cooperation at multilateral level, adding that India will work towards enhancing ongoing cooperation in capacity building of friendly countries. Furthermore, PM Modi called for global solidarity and readiness against terrorism in the same way the world has shown solidarity against challenges like climate change.

"He suggested institutionalising counter-terrorism cooperation at multilateral level. He said India will work towards enhancing ongoing cooperation in capacity building of friendly countries in this area. He said a terrorist attack, anywhere in the world should be considered as terrorism, not good or bad terrorism," Sarma said.

PM Modi calls for battle against terrorism

On Sunday, PM Modi launched a scathing attack at Pakistan for its support to terrorism. He said that India's decision to nullify Article 370 has caused trouble for those who cannot handle their country. Speaking at the 'Howdy, Modi' event at Houston in the US in the presence of US President Trump, the PM called for a "decisive battle" against terrorism. PM Modi also addressed a high-level meeting on Universal Health Coverage on Monday, at the United Nations in New York.
