Schumer slams Trump's debate conduct, Court pick
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer blasted President Donald Trump's performance at the first debate Tuesday night, calling it "obscene" and "filled with right wing bile that included lie after lie after lie."
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer blasted President Donald Trump's performance at the first debate Tuesday night, calling it "obscene" and "filled with right wing bile that included lie after lie after lie."
Schumer made the comments to reporters at the Capitol Wednesday as the Senate rushed to confirm Trump's Supreme Court pick, Judge Amy Coney Barrett, for the vacant seat before the Nov. 3 election.
The Minority Leader said "it's a disgrace" and "unfathomable" that Senate Republicans won't denounce the president's conduct in the debate and yet, they "are doing Trump's bidding by rushing through a Supreme Court nominee merely days before a national election."
Barrett was on Capitol Hill for a second day Wednesday meeting with senators ahead of confirmation hearings, expected to begin Oct. 12.
The rush by Trump to fill the Supreme Court seat is drawing fierce objections from Democrats, the first time in U.S. history a nominee will be voted on so close to a presidential election, with early voting already underway in half the states.
Democrats argue that Barrett’s nomination threatens the protections for millions of Americans under the affordable Care Act. The court will hear a case challenging the constitutionality of President Barack Obama’s health care law just after the election, adding to the urgency of the issue.
"Let's be clear: a vote to confirm Judge Amy Coney Barrett is a vote to terminate health care coverage and protections for hundreds of millions of Americans during a global pandemic, nonetheless," Schumer said.
