North Carolina is a key battleground state and Trump’s visit marks his 10th trip to the state during his presidency.
In a question and answer session following his remarks, Trump said he's thrilled to kick off the Republican National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina.
"I'm really happy that we're going to be having a piece of it, and a very important piece, in North Carolina," Trump said.
The president dismissed a question on sagging poll numbers, insisting his internal polls are "very good."
He also brushed off a question about whether he brought up reports of Russian bounties on U.S. troops in Afghanistan during his phone call with President Vladimir Putin Thursday.
Trump refused to answer, saying, "We don't talk about what we discussed," but added his conversation was "very productive."
