Maryland Democratic Sen. Chris Van Hollen said that President Donald Trump's tweet raising the prospect of a delayed election shows that Trump is losing the presidential race to former Vice President Joe Biden.

In a tweet Thursday morning, Trump contended that the expansion of voting by mail will lead to history's most fraudulent U.S. election.

This sensational warning lacks evidence, and the prospects for moving the vote beyond Nov. 3 are, at best, dim. It's not clear he even intends to try.

The date of the presidential election - the Tuesday after the first Monday in November in every fourth year - is enshrined in federal law and would require an act of Congress to change.

"The president, his MO, is he tends towards authoritarianism," Sen. Van Hollen said in an interview with the Associated Press on Thursday.

"He tramples over the Constitution all the time."

Lawmakers in both parties slammed the door shut on the notion Thursday. Regardless, the Constitution makes no provisions for a delay in the end of Trump's term - noon on Jan. 20, 2021.
