Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi warned Sunday that a "political virus" was spreading in the US to attack and discredit China.
He called on Washington to work with Beijing to build a "coordinated, cooperative and stable China-US relationship".
Wang made the remarks at a news conference on the sidelines of the annual session of China's National People's Congress, which had been postponed for more than two months because of the new coronavirus pandemic.
"Some US politicians, regardless of basic facts, have fabricated too many lies and plotted too many conspiracies," Wang said.
He said China was willing to cooperate with the US to control of the coronavirus and improve the relations that have been deteriorating since the outbreak of the pandemic, but that China would safeguard its sovereignty, territory, interests and dignity.
He warned that some US political forces were hijacking China-US relations.
"China has no intention to change the US or replace the position of the US, while it is impossible for the US to change China at its own wishful thinking," Wang said.
"Now we must be vigilant against the fact that some US political forces are hijacking the bilateral relations in an attempt to push the relations to the so-called 'New Cold War.'"
