Marilyn Monroe's 1961 Golden Globe Award auctioned for record-breaking $250,000

Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe’s 1961 Golden Globe Award sold for a whopping $250,000 (approx Rs 1.79 crore) at Julien's Auctions in Beverly Hills, California on Saturday. According to the auction officials, the award became the only Golden Globe in the world to be sold off at such a record-breaking price. The award was presented to the Hollywood star for World Film Favourite Female from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

Monroe's raven black two-seater, 1956 Ford Thunderbird, which was auctioned for the first time, fetched $490,000 (Rs 3.51 crores) at the Icons & Idols: Hollywood, which took place Friday and Saturday. Her black satin blouse with matching necktie, that she wore in 1956, was sold off at $43,750 (Rs. 31.40 lakh).

Monroe, one of the most collectible celebrities, was pictured driving in the car with her husband, playwright Arthur Miller, shortly after their June 1956 wedding. The movie star owned the vehicle for six years until shortly before her death in 1962.

Speaking to the media, Darren Julien, president of Julien's Auctions, revealed that Monroe's raven black two-seater car was "not only part of automotive history but comes with an aura of glamour, romance and tragedy of a true Hollywood legend."

Back in the times, Monroe gifted the Thunderbird to her acting coach’s son, Lee Strasberg, in 1962.

Furthermore, along with almost a dozen other items owned by the iconic actress, her copy of Playboy's first issue with her on the cover, signed by publisher Hugh Hefner also sold for $32,000 (Rs 23 lakh). 

Apart from Ms Monroe’s belongings, a rare collection of the first 10 comic book issues of 'The Amazing Spider-Man' signed by Marvel comics creator Stan Lee, were also auctioned and they fetched a whopping $19,200 (Rs. 13.78 lakh). Marvel editor Stan Lee passed away at the age of 95 on November 12.

Moreover, personalized items from other Hollywood celebrities, including Tina Turner and Cher, were also auctioned. Also, a military uniform that Hollywood superstar Tom Hanks wore in his Oscar-winning role in Forrest Grump also made it to the auntion list.
