U.S. President Donald Trump says the United States won't be closed down for a second time, even if there's a resurgence of the coronavirus.

Trump on Thursday toured a Ford Motor plant in Ypsilanti Township, Michigan. The facility now makes ventilators.

The president said governors will continue to reopen their states because of public pressure.

"I think that a lot of these states, the ones that are sort of sticking to a certain very rigid pattern, I think they're going to stop. I don't think the people are going to stand for it. This is a country that's meant to be open, not closed."

The president was asked about the possibility that a reopening of the country would lead to a new surge of coronavirus cases. He said it could happen, but that was not a reason to shut the it down for a second time.

"We're going to put out the fires. We're not going to close the country. We're going to put out the fires. That could be whether it's an ember or a flame. We're going to put it out, but we're not closing our country."
