A video capturing the impassioned speech of Hana Rawhiti Maipi Clarke, New Zealand's youngest Member of Parliament at just 21 years old, has taken the internet by storm. The young politician, hailing from Huntly, a small town nestled between Auckland and Hamilton, is not only making waves due to her age but also for her commitment to advocating for the rights of New Zealand's native communities.
Elected to Parliament in October last year, Maipi-Clarke achieved a historic victory by unseating incumbent Nanaia Mahuta, a highly respected MP who had held the Hauraki-Waikato seat since 2008. Maipi-Clarke, being of Maori descent, has been actively engaged in fighting for the rights and well-being of New Zealand's indigenous communities, echoing the legacy of her grandfather, Taitimu Maipi, a member of the Maori activist group Nga Tamatoa.
In her compelling words, she made a solemn promise to the people, stating, "I will die for you ... but I will also live for you," a pledge that resonated deeply with her audience. The New Zealand Herald reported on the emotional and powerful delivery of her message, capturing the essence of her commitment to serving her constituents.
Born and raised in Huntly, Maipi-Clarke runs a Maori community garden, adding a personal touch to her political journey. The garden serves as a platform for educating children about gardening in alignment with the community's lunar calendar, emphasizing cultural sustainability and environmental awareness.
In her speech, she reflected on the advice she received before entering Parliament, acknowledging the challenge of not taking things personally in the political arena. However, she expressed that she couldn't help but take to heart everything said within the Chamber.
