Dhaka: The Anti-Discrimination Student Movement coordinators have announced that Dr. Muhammad Yunus will lead the interim government in Bangladesh as the Chief Adviser.

In a video posted on social media early Tuesday morning, Nahid Islam, one of the key coordinators of the movement, said that Prof Yunus has agreed to take on this crucial responsibility at the call of the student community to save the country, the Daily Star newspaper reported.

Who is Muhammad Yunus, Likely To Lead Bangladesh Interim Government?

Muhammad Yunus is a social entrepreneur, banker, civil society leader and a banker who has also been awarded the Nobel Prize for founding the Grameen Bank and pioneering microcredit and microfinance concepts, in the year 2006.

Apart from the Nobel Prize, Muhammad Yunus is a recipient of multiple national and international awards including the United States Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal.

Muhammad Yunus was also on the board of directors of the United Nations Foundation from 1998 to 2021.

Educational Qualifications of Muhammad Yunus

Speaking about the educational qualifications of Muhammad Yunus, the social worker, entrepreneur and banker did his schooling from Lamabazar Primary School in Chittagong.

In his matriculation examination, Muhammad Yunus secured the 16th rank and passed out with flying colours from Chittagong Collegiate School in East Pakistan (later, East Bengal in Bangladesh). 

He completed his higher education from Chittagong College and the Dhaka University. 

Muhammad Yunus did his PhD in Economics as part of the Vanderbilt University Graduate Program in Economic Development (GPED) in the year 1971. He also ran the Bangladesh Information Centre in US and also founded the citizen's committee during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971.

Muhammad Yunus was the first Bangladeshi to win a Nobel Prize; he shared this honour with the Grameen Bank.

Muhammad Yunus To Be Chief Adviser of Interim Govt

Nahid, the coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement said, "We have decided that the interim government would be formed in which internationally renowned Nobel Laureate Dr Mohammad Yunus, who has wide acceptability, would be the chief adviser." 

"We took 24 hours to announce a framework for the interim government. However, considering the emergency situation, we are announcing it now," Nahid added.
