The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Secretary-General on Tuesday said that while the COVID-19 crisis is concerning, he is more worried about the impact of climate change.
The WMO says over 11,000 disasters have been attributed to weather, climate and incidents like tsunamis that are related to water, over the last 50 years -- causing 2 million deaths and racking up $3.6 trillion worth of economic costs.
"From the WMO side, we are very much concerned of the current situation with COVID but we are also much more concerned of the impact of the climate change. If we fail with climate mitigation then we will see problems of very different magnitude when it comes to human suffering and also economic losses," said Petteri Taalas.
