Woman claims champagne secret to her longevity on 108th birthday

Woman celebrates 108th birthday, calls champagne the secret to it. Dorothy Flowers from Bupa-owned Southlands Care Home in Harrogate, North Yorkshire turned 108

Dorothy Flowers who turned 108 this week reportedly revealed that the secret to her astounding longevity is champagne and following the horse races. Dorothy received about 654 cards on her 108th birthday after an appeal by care home staff at the Bupa-owned Southlands Care Home in Harrogate, North Yorkshire. The centenarian was reportedly overjoyed to receive messages from the well-wishers and also received special treatment on her big day. Resident manager Helene Ballinger told the media that they were hoping to receive a card for each year of Mrs. Flowers’ life. However, they were overwhelmed when they received cards from several countries across the world like Spain, the USA, and Australia.

The manager said that Dorothy would sit at the reception and savor the box of chocolates stacked in her separate drawer yet she is especially fond of champagne which she credits for her longevity.

About Mrs. Flowers

Flowers was born in 1911 at Leeds, West Yorkshire. Her family included her parents Frank and Fanny Wingate, and brother Norman. She is said to have met her husband, Leonard, in her teens when she left Leeds Girls Modern School aged 14 to pursue a career as an accountant. The two joined the Racecourse Betting Control Board commonly known as The Tote following the training. Leonard and Flowers married just before the outbreak of the Second World War and moved to London to support the racing industry. In 1963, the couple moved with their jobs to Surrey before retiring in 1963 to Torbay, Devon. Leonard passed away in 1981and Flowers later settled in Harrogate in 1995 to be nearer to Judith, her niece who was close to her and like a child, as she did not have any of her own.

Flowers' niece said the media that the cards were overwhelming and that her aunt was very happy when people are around her though she is amazingly independent.
