Wounded protesters treated after clashes at Beirut protest

Public fury over this week's massive explosion in Beirut brought protesters out again on Sunday, with escalating tensions outside parliament and in Martyrs' Square leading to security forces using tear gas.

Unrest which started during the day continued as night fell in Lebanon's capital as the demonstrators attempted to breach the heavily-guarded parliament.

Lebanese Red Cross paramedics stepped in to treat some of the injured protesters.

It followed on from a night of protests on Saturday against the country's ruling elite, who is blamed for the chronic mismanagement and corruption that is believed to be behind the explosion at a Beirut Port warehouse.

Hundreds of tons of highly explosive material were stored in the waterfront hangar, and the blast sent a shock wave that killed at least 160 people, wounding nearly 6,000 and defacing the coastline of Beirut, where hundreds of buildings were destroyed.
