It marks the directorial debut of Aditya Nimbalkar, with Vikrant Massey playing a serial killer who preys on children. Upon its release, viewers praised both the filmmakers and Massey's chilling portrayal of Prem. Here's the real story behind Sector 36 and the real-life Prem, Surinder Koli.
Real-Story which inspired Sector 36
The Netflix original movie Sector 36 is inspired by the 2006 Nithari Killings in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. The names of those involved have been changed to protect their identities. The real story begins when locals in Noida discover a decomposed hand in a drain. Despite this, the police initially dismissed any foul play.
Frustrated by the lack of action, residents sought help from SC Mishra, a former president of the Resident Welfare Association (RWA). With his assistance, further investigations led to the recovery of more body parts around Nithari.
The case involved allegations of rape, murder, abduction, and the dismemberment of children and women. There are also reports of alleged cannibalism of the murdered kids.
During the investigation, CBI officials found bags filled with remains in the drains near the residence of Moninder Singh Pandher, a wealthy businessman, and his servant, Surinder Koli. After interrogating Koli, investigators concluded that he was a psychopath responsible for the killings. Both were sentenced to death.
Who is Surinder Koli?
The character of Prem, played by Vikrant Massey in Netflix’s latest Sector 36 is said to be loosely based on the real-life psychopath, Surinder Koli, who made the headlines in 2006. Surinder Koli was the serial killer who worked as a domestic help at Moninder Singh Pandher's house - who is co-accused in the case. The two allegedly raped and murdered children and women at Pandher's Noida home.
Surinder Koli was the main accused who was involved in the brutal act. His name comes in highlight after the remains of many kids were found in Noida Sector 31, near a village named Nithari. These recent film have sparked renewed public interest in the case.
