This hidden 'yellow mode' on iPhone offers extra battery life
While Apple has improved the iPhone battery over the past few years, it falls short of the expectations, especially with similarly-priced Android counterparts.
The iPhone battery has often divided both Apple fans and critics over its longevity, with most users claiming they would want a better battery life over some features in the iPhone. While Apple has improved the iPhone battery over the past few years, it falls short of the expectations, especially with similarly-priced Android counterparts in the picture. However, the iPhone has a hidden "yellow mode" that can almost instantly boost the battery life, saving frustration.
The "yellow mode" on iPhone
It is officially known as Low Power Mode, available within the battery settings on the iPhone. The often-missed feature turns the battery bar on the top of the iPhone yellow, but that is just an indication that the device has entered the special mode that makes it harder for the battery to run out quickly. The Low Power Mode restricts background activities, such as frequent mail updates and high display refresh rates on Pro models, to reduce power consumption. The performance of the iPhone is also slightly impacted but causes the battery to deplete less, resulting in massive battery gains.
"Low Power Mode temporarily reduces background activity like downloads and mail fetch until you can fully charge your iPhone," reads Apple's description for the mode.
Here's a list of the features that Low Power Mode will reduce or affect:
- 5G (except for video streaming) on iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 models
- Auto-Lock (defaults to 30 seconds)
- Display brightness
- Display refresh rate (limited up to 60 Hz) on iPhone and iPad models with ProMotion display
- Some visual effects
- iCloud Photos (temporarily paused)
- Automatic downloads
- Email fetch
- Background app refresh
How to activate the "yellow mode" on iPhone
Method 1: Using the Settings app
- Open the Settings app on the iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap on Battery.
- Toggle the switch next to Low Power Mode to turn it on (it will turn green when enabled).
Method 2: Through Control Center (on iPhones with Face ID)
- Swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen to open Control Centre.
- Press and hold the Battery icon.
- Tap on the Low Power Mode button that appears.
Turning the Low Power Mode instantly changes the battery icon colour from green to yellow, thus, activating the “yellow mode.”
