In Line With NEP, Assam Govt Merges All School Boards, Unified Education Board Formed

Assam government has merged the state's School Education Board and Higher Secondary Education Council to form a unified education board.

Guwahati: Calling it a major "milestone", Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday announced that the state government has merged the School Education Board of Assam and the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council to form a unified Assam State School Education Board in conformity with NEP 2020.

According to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma , the "new board will align school education with the requirements of the 21st century."

In a post on X, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, "In a major milestone towards taking our education sector to new heights and in confirmity with NEP 2020, we have merged SEBA & AHSEC to form a unified Assam State School Edutcation Board. The new board will synchronise school education tailored to the needs of the 21st century."

Meanwhile, Assam Governor Lakshman Acharya has appointed RC Jain as the Chairman of the Assam State School Education Board, and Rukma Gohain Baruah, Chairman of the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council, as the Vice-Chairman of the new board.

Their terms will last for three years or until they turn 70, whichever comes first, starting from the date of this notification.

According to the Ministry of Education, the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 aims to transform education by creating "an education system rooted in Indian ethos that contributes directly to transforming India, or Bharat, into an equitable and vibrant knowledge society. This is achieved by providing high-quality education to all and making India a global knowledge superpower."

The NEP 2020 is built on five key principles: access, equity, quality, affordability, and accountability. It is designed to equip our youth to tackle both national and global challenges in the present and future, as outlined by the Ministry of Education.
