Bihar Bypolls : ECI debuts 'Booth App' to verify voters with QR code

Facilitating faster polling, Election Commission of India, on Monday, has debuted the 'Booth App' in Bihar where by-polls were held. The booth app was launched on a pilot basis to identify voters using the QR code. The visual of a poll-officer using the app was shared by Bihar's Chief Election Officer's office.

Bihar by-polls 2019

Bypolls were held in five assembly constituencies - Kishanganj, Nathnagar, Belhar, Simri Bakhtiyarpur and Daraunda and the  Samastipur (SC) Lok Sabha seat. JD(U) is contesting on 4 assembly seats, BJP on one and LJP is contesting on Samastipur parliamentary constituency. The BJP has fielded Sweety Singh against Congress nominee Saida Bano from Kishanganj assembly constituency. The results will be announced on October 24.

Bihar assembly elections 2020

With a total of 243 seats in Bihar assembly, the state goes to polls in  While the ruling alliance of JD(U) and BJP are reportedly having internal tussles, the Opposition alliance - the Mahagathbandhan appears to be directionless after the massive poll drubbing in the general elections 2019. Lalu Yadav's party failed to open its account in the general elections and Nitish Kumar is facing anti-incumbency. With JD(U) VP's strategy team working with Mamata Banerjee in West Bengal, Nitish Kumar speaking against the BJP on various issues and the repeated invitations by the RJD to Kumar for rejoining the Mahagathbandhan, the poll-season in Bihar piques interest.

Currently, the JD(U) holds 69 setas while the BJP holds 54 seats. The Opposition consisting of RJD and Congress -majorly, holds 105 seats. The JD(U)-led NDA alliance trounced the Mahagathbandhan in the Lok Sabha elections in the state. While the NDA won 39 of the 40 seats, RJD won one seat and the Congress failed to win a single seat.
