Both Amethi and Rae Bareli have been Congress bastions, however, Rahul Gandhi lost 2019 Lok Sabha elections from Amethi to BJP leer and Union Minister Smriti Irani.

During his tenure from 2004 to 2019, Rahul Gandhi remained committed to Amethi until his defeat to BJP. Last year, Sonia Gandhi relinquished Rae Bareli seat after being elected to Rajya Sabha. She h represented Congress' longstanding stronghold in Rae Bareli for two deces, from 2004 to 2024.
