A two-day visit by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to the northeastern state of Mizoram has sparked unexpected praise from the local Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) unit, which has dubbed the Gandhi scion as a de facto “brand ambassador” for their saffron party. This surprising endorsement comes in the lead-up to the impending state elections, where political rhetoric and campaigns are in full swing.
The BJP's state unit chief, Vanlalhmuaka, made this unorthodox declaration, expressing his views on Rahul Gandhi's visit as he highlighted the apparent beneficial impact of the Congress leader's presence. "You know Rahul Gandhi is a brand ambassador for BJP. He is the BJP's best campaigner we have in India. Whenever Rahul Gandhi campaigned, the BJP always had a good result in every election," Vanlalhmuaka stated.
Vanlalhmuaka went further to refer to Rahul Gandhi's visit as a "blessing" for the BJP, hinting at the hopes for a similar outcome in Mizoram. "His visit to Mizoram will be a blessing for the BJP Mizoram by this time. And that is what I expect. I wish that if he can stay longer, there will be a blessing for the Mizoram BJP," he added, underlining the BJP's optimism about the upcoming polls.

Earlier during his visit on Monday, Rahul commenced the Congress party's campaign in Mizoram with a promise to protect the culture, language, traditions, and religion of the state. However, this statement did not sit well with the BJP state president, who suggested that Rahul lacks a deep understanding of India's history.
"Rahul Gandhi doesn't understand the history of India. I would like to ask Rahul Gandhi what his party did from 1966 to 1986 in Mizoram. They shuttered all the good culture, good culture in the state. They bombarded Mizoram in 1966, so what he is talking about? Let him read the history of India first," the BJP Mizoram chief said.
'BJP will play key role in govt formation in Mizoram'
On the topic of the upcoming elections, the BJP state chief made it clear that the saffron party has high ambitions for the northeast state. "This time BJP will be, if not form alone the government, then we will be part of the government," Vanlalhmuaka stated, suggesting that the BJP intends to play a significant role in the formation of the next state government.
In the 2018 Mizoram assembly elections, the Mizo National Front secured 26 out of 40 seats with a vote share of 37.8 per cent, emerging as the victorious party. The Congress managed to secure five seats, while the BJP won just one seat. Notably, the upcoming polls are scheduled for November 7 and counting set for December 3.
