Deepika Padukone took the internet by a storm when she released the first look of her next film, Chhapaak. Her look was highly praised by everyone from the film industry. Deepika plays the role of an acid attack survivor, Malti. The film is based on the real-life of Laxmi Agarwal.

Who is Laxmi Agarwal?

Laxmi Agarwal is a campaigner to stop the sale of acids in India. Laxmi lead a normal life until 2005 when she was attacked by a man for rejecting his marriage proposal. She was in hospital for months and had to undergo multiple surgeries. One would normally lose hope in life but Laxmi picked herself up and went on to gather petitions to curb the sale of acids in India. Her petition led to the Supreme Court regulating the sale of acids and made the prosecution of acid attacks faster.

Laxmi founded Stop Sale Acid, a social initiative against the misuse of acid. The campaign gained nationwide support from all corners. Laxmi Agarwal was also the director of Chhanv Foundation, an NGO dedicated to helping the survivors of acid attacks. She has received various awards for her campaign including the International Women Of Courage Award in 2014 by the then-First Lady of USA Michelle Obama.

During her fight, she met another social activist, Alok Dixit. The two challenged society and opted for a live-in relationship. Shortly after their first child was born, the couple decided to part ways. In various interviews, Laxmi has revealed her struggles to make ends meet after the separation.

Chhapaak is being directed by Raazi director, Meghna Gulzar. The film also stars Vikrant Massey in an important role. The film is in its post-production stage. Chhapaak will release on January 10, 2020. The audience is eagerly awaiting to see the hard-hitting, realistic story of Laxmi Agarwal on the big screen.
