'Dream Girl': Director Raaj Shaandilyaa refutes plagiarism accusations

Ayushmann Khurrana's upcoming comedy-drama 'Dream Girl' was recently drawn into controversy after Bollywood filmmaker Janak Toprani accused the makes of plagiarism. As per media reports, Janak Toprani who has directed a film called 'Call For Fun' in 2017 alleged that Ayushmann Khurrana's 'Dream Girl' has a striking resemblance to his film which sees the main male lead character donning various female avatars.

Recently, 'Dream Girl' director Raaj Shaandilyaa responded to the plagiarism allegations and defied all such claims. The filmmaker during a recent interview reportedly said that the idea of the film belongs to him and his co-writer Nirmaan D. Singh since 2010 and they have also registered it. Raaj Shaandilyaa further emphasized on his point saying that the concerned director's film was not commercially successful, so would he or anybody replicate the idea.
Janak Toprani accusation
After the trailer of 'Dream Girl' released, filmmaker Janak Toprani reportedly put out a statement claiming that Balaji Telefilms stole his idea for the upcoming venture. He also revealed that he had approached Balaji Telefilms with the script twice but it was rejected by them. He further informed that Ekta Kapoor was not a part of the talks, as he had spoken to the production team.

Janak Toprani also said that he tried to call Nachiket Pantvaidya, CEO of Balaji, but he did not answer his call. He said he will take legal action against the makers if 'Dream Girl' turns out to be a similar film.

Raaj Shaandilyaa to make his directorial debut with 'Dream Girl'
Filmmaker Raaj Shaandilyaa is all set to make his directorial debut with 'Dream Girl'. As revealed in the trailer, the comedy-drama features Ayushmann Khurrana as a Tele caller who aces his female alter ego Pooja while calling his customers. Unaware of the originality of the situation, his customers- Annu Kapoor (who plays a Police officer), Manjot Singh, Vijay Raaz and others can be seen falling for his alter ego who they hail as their 'Dream Girl'.

The film takes interesting twists as his customers eventually fall for her and come down to pulling each other's hair to win her. Talking about 'Dream Girl', the director in a previous interview revealed that the film is set in Mathura and Ayushmann will be heard speaking Haryanvi and Hindi languages in the local accent.

Ayushmann Khurrana who is known for his niche of offbeat films looks promising in the upcoming venture. Talking about his versatility, Raaj Shaandilyaa in a previous interview with PTI said, "Ayushmann is a very simple, sincere actor. There's no ego or attitude in him. He works like it's his first film. When an actor is so flexible and giving, it immensely helps the film. Working with him is like making one of the most wonderful films of your life."
What's next for Ayushmann Khurrana
Meanwhile, besides 'Dream Girl', Ayushmann Khurrana also has a number of films in the pipeline for release. He will be starring in 'Bala', 'Gulabo Sitabo' and, 'Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan' and all three films are set for a 2020 release. 'Dream Girl' on the other hand will be released on September 13, this year.
