In an interview, Sircar said, "I have been waiting to tell the heroic tale of Shaheed Udham Singh for a very long time. It is a story very close to my heart. For it, I needed an actor who could give his heart and soul to the film, be with me and tell the story together. Vicky fits the bill perfectly. I have seen his work and the dedication he brings to it. I'm very happy he is on board this project."

The actor will be shooting in Amritsar as a part of the 25-day schedule in the city. The movie is being directed by Shoojit Sircar and written by Ritesh Shah and Shubendu Bhattacharya. Reportedly, Irrfan Khan was the first choice to play the titular role but was later replaced with Vicky since Irrfan was diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumour which meant he couldn’t do an action role.

Sardar Udham Singh was a revolutionary who assassinated Michael O' Dwyer, the British officer who was responsible for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. Sardar Udham Singh is set to hit the screens in 2020, and Vicky has already started shooting for the second schedule of the film. Talking about his first collaboration with Shoojit Sircar, Vicky had earlier said in a statement, "It's a surreal feeling because it's like a dream come true as I am finally getting to work with him. I have always been a big admirer of how Shoojit sir looks at his stories."
"The way he is looking at the character and the world is extraordinary as well as beautiful. Plus, it's also a big honor for me that finally, I am going to be directed by him. Honestly, that's something that will take time to sink in," added Vicky Kaushal.
