So far, only $41 million has been covered from $200 million budget of Disney movie according to Maoyan despite a month-long release.

Eight Hundred, a historical epic movie was close behind with $21.7 million at box office. A number of factors contributed adversely to Mulan's box office collection reported New York Times. Chinese government minimized media cover for Mulan because it was shot in region of Xinjiang. During Mulan's shooting schedule, a campaign was underway for ethnic Uighurs to keep m in internment camps as a part of government's assimilation campaigns. Mulan's villains are shown to be a group of an ancient community called Huns. It also does t help that film credits thank government directly for se camps.

Or factors also contributed to underperformance of Disney's Mulan in China. Coronavirus pandemic had postponed initial release and even w atres are operating with only 50% of ir capacity.
